Family-owned Unex manufactures and develops state-of-the-art fireplace solutions for the ambient heating industry.
Market leader since '87
Unex BV is founded by Ralph Herder. The company stemmed from the Enschede-based Ramie Union. They manufactured ceramic (porcelain) parts for laboratory purposes and the automotive industry. Unex's first imitation logs were made of porcelain. Fun fact: the name Unex is a combination of two (originally) Enschede-based companies - Ramie UNion and coNEX. Conex manufactures welding caps for installation technology.
Relocation
Due to its growth, Unex moves from Noord Esmarkerrondweg to a larger facility in the port area at no. 100 Lonnekerbrugstraat in Enschede.
Unparalleled level of detail
Unex enters into a strategic partnership with Pyrotek in the US and introduces a new product, Pyro Glow. These are imitation logs and other fireproof products with an unparalleled level of detail and an extremely beautiful glow effect.
Continued growth
Another move to accommodate further growth. This time in the same street, to Lonnekerbrugstraat 80-B. Unex now has a production site of around 2300 m2.
Own production in China
To remain as competitive as possible, Unex launches its own production facility in China. A portion of production takes place in China.
Strong market position
Unex strengthens its market position and acquires Belgian-based HTC bvba. A new product is also introduced: U-MIX. These are imitation logs and other fireproof products with an exceptionally high level of detail and strength.
Like father, like sons
Founder and director Ralph Herder passes away on 16 January 2010. His two sons, Carlos and Victor continue his legacy.

Innovative trendsetter
Unex is committed to remain at the forefront of innovation at all times and wants to keep up with developments in the ambient heating industry. To this end, Unex has developed a new product specifically aimed at the electric fireplace market: E-MIX. These products are indistinguishable from the real thing and give the electric fireplace another dimension.

Health and safety are a top priority for us and are an integral component of our business strategy. At Unex, we believe it is important to balance economic, social and environmental aspects. As a result, we are constantly improving our products and are always looking for ways to work cleaner and safer.
We also like to work with our customers to explore ways of working even more sustainably. Such as the possibility of working completely ceramic fibre-free.
Victor Herder
I am often asked what it is like to be at the helm with my brother of the company our father once founded. As we have completely different roles, this actually works very well. From the very beginning of Unex, there was a nice working environment which made this a very welcoming foundation for our entry into the family company.
I quickly developed a passion for the profession and the industry. It is dynamic, challenging and far from boring. I prefer to focus on product improvement and development. Along with everything that goes with it, such as the production process and finding new solutions. I really get a kick out of seeing our innovations in action in a fireplace.
Carlos Herder
Following the passing of my father, I resumed the running of Unex at the age of 23. With the entire Unex team, we still accomplish that task every day and can truly speak of a family business. What appeals to me so much are the many facets of the business and the diversity of our market. It is such a fantastic challenge to develop something innovative together with the customer and to see it become a success.
As Managing Director, I feel responsible to safeguard the core values (quality, continuity and innovation) within our company and in the collaboration with our customers and suppliers. The way Unex has developed over the years is something to be proud of. I am truly confident in saying that Unex is a leading player in the ambient heating industry.
